Bus operators call for fare hike

Kolkata: Bus operators demanded a hike in the fare and threatened of going on a strike for consecutive days, February 1 and 2, if their demand is not met. At present, there are around 32,000 private buses and 13,000 mini-buses plying in the state. A section of bus operators even staged a demonstration, demanding increase in the minimum fare of bus to Rs 10 and Rs 12 for mini-buses. At present, one needs to pay Rs 6 for travelling 4 km in a bus, while in mini-bus, Rs 7 is the fare for 3 km. According to bus operators, there is need for a steep increase in the fare as it has not been increased since 2014.
