Assailants posing as cops enter house, murder hawker

Posing themselves as police officers, miscreants entered into a house at Hooghly's Bandel on Monday night and opened fire at a person from point black range. Soon after, they disappeared after the whole operation which took only three minutes.

The investigators, however, were unable to make any headway in this case as the deceased, Swarup Banik (42) was a roadside hawker and the reason for him being killed is still unknown.

On the other hand, the investigators learnt that the assailants did not demand any money from the family members of Banik and did not take away any property from the house – so clearly, they were not burglars but professional killers.

Investigators are looking for the answer as to why professional killers would be sent to slay a poor roadside hawker.

It was at around 11:30 pm when the miscreants knocked the door of Swarup Banik's house. The Baniks were sleeping at that time when they heard the sound of repeated knocking on the main door.

The miscreants said they came from a local police station. They claimed to be policemen who wanted to enter the house for certain investigation. Mitali, the wife of Swarup, opened the door. The goons rushed inside the house and pointed gun at Mitali and Swarup's mother. The assailants soon headed to the bedroom where Swarup was sleeping. They pumped bullets thrice on his chest and decamped from there.

The neighbours soon came to the spot. They took the victim to Chinsurah District Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

The investigators learnt that Mitali was a former bar dancer in Mumbai. She fell in love with Swarup after coming back to Bengal to her residence at Bandel. Swarup married her in 2012 and started living together at his house.

"Swarup was innocent and a down to earth person. He was introvert in nature and remained busy with his business and family," a local resident said.
