Kejri stands firm on Jan Lokpal Bill, Najeeb Jung allows SIT on Sikh riots
The Delhi government last week had recommended to Jung to set up a SIT to probe the anti-Sikh riots within a time frame of one year. ‘The Lt Governor has given his nod to it (SIT probe),’ Kejriwal said after meeting the Lieutenant Governor earlier on Monday. PWD Minister Manish Sisodia said besides reopening of FIRs, the SIT would also inquire into allegations of destruction of evidence by police.
Jung, however, refused to get persuaded by the chief minister to allow tabling of the Jan lokpal Bill in Delhi assembly without the approval of the Home Ministry, as per the precedence. In a note released to the media, the Raj Niwas secretariat said, ‘To avoid any dispute in the matter and to obtain full clarity, the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor has referred the matter to the ministry of Law and Justice for a final opinion on the constitutional position.’
Referring to the LG’s move, Kejriwal said, ‘There is a dilemma in front of him (Jung). At one hand there is Constitution, on the other hand there is the home minister’s order. I have told Lt Governor that the order is unconstitutional. Lt Governor said he was seeking law ministry views and accordingly will take decision. He has his own restrictions.’
The AAP leader, however, said that there was no going back on his decision to push the bill, come what may in the way. ‘My government has taken oath to uphold the constitution and make Delhi corruption free. We are ready to make any sacrifice for this,’ he said.
