Ex law minister no more than Class XII pass-out, claim cops

The investigation on Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar’s education qualification, in which the Delhi Police claimed to have invested almost a month, has so far disclosed that the minister is not more than Class XII pass, unless the minister produces other new certificates to prove his qualifications, said a senior police official after Tomar’s arrest on Tuesday.

The police claimed to have acted on the basis of a complaint by the Secretary of the Bar Council of Delhi, submitted at the office of DCP (South) on May 11, in which the council had expressed doubt over Tomar’s Bachelor’s degree in science and another in law.

“In 2010, Tomar had submitted his mark-sheets and certificates corresponding his school education, graduation and professional (legal) education at the Bar Council’s office and he was enrolled as a member in 2011,” said RS <g data-gr-id="48">Krishnia</g>, Joint Commissioner of Police (South East). Two teams were formed by the police to investigate this case. While one of them was sent to Awadh University at Faizabad in UP to investigate Tomar’s B.Sc degree, another was sent to Tilka Manjhi University at Bhagalpur in Bihar to verify Tomar’s law degree. However, Tomar’s Class X, Class XII board certificates and mark-sheets were not subjected to verification, as they were not particularly suspected upon in the complaint.

From the Awadh investigation, it emerged that the roll number appearing on Tomar’s documents was not registered in both the college and university records. Further, the Controller of Examination at Ram Manohar Lohia College under Awadh University, from which Tomar reportedly appeared in the B.Sc examination, claimed that no mark-sheet or B.Sc degree in the name of Tomar have been issued by the certificate as per their records.

In the Bhagalpur part of the investigation, it emerged that another student named Sanjay Kumar Chaudhary was registered by the roll number corresponding to Tomar’s LLB certificates. Also, the provisional certificate allegedly issued by Tilka Manjhi University was found fake. It also had the forged signature of the Controller of Examination in the concerned institute.

Tomar’s troubles do not end here. The migration certificate submitted by him at the Tilka Manjhi University also allegedly pertained to the Bundelkhand University in Jhansi.  It added to the confusion as at the law college (VNLS in Munger), Tomar had registered himself as a graduate from Awadh
University. The Bundelkhand University later clarified that it had never issued any such certificate in the name of Jitender Singh Tomar, said <g data-gr-id="31">Krishnia</g>.

“The FIR against Tomar was registered on June 8, in which he was booked under Sections 420 (Cheating), 466 (Forgery), 471 (Using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 486 (Selling goods marked with a counterfeit property mark) and 120-B (Criminal Conspiracy). He was arrested on Tuesday,” said Deepak Mishra, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order).
