Woman taekwondo player shot dead by her spurned lover

Gurugram: A woman taekwondo player identified as Sarita was shot dead by a person who apparently was disappointed after his marriage proposal was turned down by her. The suspect who has been identified as Somveer was also an athlete and was her colleague.

According to law enforcement officials, the incident occurred at around 4:30 am on Tuesday where it is believed that Somveer and Sarita had a bitter argument over the issue of marriage.

Furious over being repeatedly turned down, Somveer in a fit of rage shot Sarita from close range on the frontal portion of the head resulting in her instant death. After committing the crime, he fled from the spot and has been at large since then.

The Gurugram police have registered the case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code on the complaint lodged by the deceased's parents. Initial investigations have revealed that Somveer has also cases registered against him on various cases of assault.

The suspect belongs to Jhajjar which is 40 kilometers from Gurugram. He used to visit Gurugram frequently for his sports training requirements. It is believed that Somveer also had estranged relations with his family members and had stopped visiting his house in Jhajjar.

Sarita (25) who belongs to Bela Khurd village got acquainted with Somveer four years ago during the training sessions. For a short stint of the time, she was also being coached by the murder suspect.

The deceased, Sarita, had completed her DPEd (Diploma in Physical Education) and was looking for a job and the accused was a wrestler and had quit his job as a coach recently.

After developing a friendly relationship, the suspect allegedly began pressurising her and her family for marriage which was repeatedly being turned down.

The aggrieved family of the deceased has even alleged that in the last couple of years he began stalking the sportswoman repeatedly in order to intimidate her. The Gurugram police have also highlighted that there was a complaint filed by Sarita in one of the city police stations.

"Our initial investigations have revealed that the deceased and the suspect knew each other for a long time. It has also come to our notice that the deceased had filed a complaint against the suspect. Our team is now investigating the case from every angle. We will soon be able to make headway in the case," said a senior official from Gurugram police.
