Waste management: SDMC flags off 'Eco Hub on Wheels'; perks to discourage use of plastic
New Delhi: In an effort to dispose of plastic waste and discourage the use of single-use plastic, SDMC has started an unique initiative 'Eco Hub on Wheels'- A one-stop destination for reducing-reusing-recycling. Mayor, Sunita Kangra said that under this project, a truck named 'Eco Hub on Wheels' will take rounds of various wards across West Zone and collect plastic waste from citizens and in exchange will handover cotton bags, jute bags, organic manure, discounted food coupons and t-shirts/sweaters to the citizens.
Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti while elaborating on this project said, "In a bid to keep the SDMC area plastic-free, we have flagged-off this unique truck called 'Eco Hub on Wheels." Speaking on the perks to be given out, he added, "SDMC will give 20 per cent discounted food coupons or T-shirts/Sweater in exchange of 5 kg of dry waste which includes papers, cardboard, plastic items, old steel items, glass bottles, aluminium cans etc. Other than this, for 3 kg of plastic, one jute bag and for 1kg plastic, one cotton bag will be given to the citizens.
He further said that another facility of "Cloth Bank" will be also provided in which citizen can donate their old clothes for the needy. This eco-friendly project will be implemented in other zones too, to curb down the use of single-use plastic. Standing Committee Chairman Bhupender Gupta said that through this innovative step we will create awareness among citizens to discourage plastic items and switch to eco-friendly products. This project will offer a solution to the problem of waste management and disposal.
