NEW DELHI: Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal directed the Delhi Police to strengthen the Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) infrastructure and resources using latest technology. On Thursday, Baijal chaired the Law and Order meeting on Anti-Human Trafficking Unit and Missing Children.
Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) informed the LG about various initiatives undertaken to combat human trafficking in the Capital.
These include identification of affected areas and persons involved in trafficking; vigorous and concerted action against traffickers; periodic meetings held by nodal officers to review and monitor efforts taken for preventing and combating trafficking; liaison with various departments and NGOs for immediate relief, counseling, medical help, long-term rehabilitation etc.
A statement from the LG House noted, "The LG was also briefed about the initiatives against human trafficking, such as imparting training to police personnel at various levels to deal with the crime of Human Trafficking in Police Training College (PTC) and district level; exchange of information in the interstate crime coordination meetings; police staff posted at railway stations/bus terminals sensitised regularly; a centralised Missing Person Squad functioning at PS Kotwali for entire Delhi; District Missing Person Unit (DMPU) created in each district in addition to Central Missing Person Squad.
The LG told Delhi Police that the Crime Branch and local police should develop intelligence and take action against organised gangs that force children or adults into begging, and exemplary and deterrent action must be taken against them. Delhi Police should also visit families of children included in 'Pehchaan Scheme' and 'Operation Milap' to develop a sense of security among the parents, he added.
He also told police that the statistics of untraced children should be analysed and cases in which children are still untraced should be thoroughly investigated.
