Traffic goes haywire after heavy downpour

New Delhi: The national Capital woke up to another morning of heavy rains on Sunday, which brought relief to residents from the humid weather but also flooded many busy roads and threw the traffic haywire.

Water-logging was reported in close to hundred places in the city, causing long traffic snarls, and many commuters voiced their displeasure on social media.

Among the affected areas were Modi Mill, South Avenue, Bhairon Marg, Lajpat Nagar market, Kela Ghat and Kashmiri Gate.

Delhi Traffic Police issued multiple traffic alerts for commuters and posted visuals of water-logged roads on its official Twitter handle.

Water-logging was also reported at Karan Singh Shooting Range T-point on MB Road and Netaji Subhash Marg to GPO Chhatta Rail, Okhla Sabzi Mandi Gate No. 1 and Gate No. 2, Outer Ring Road near Munirka from IIT towards the Airport, Hanuman Setu on the Ring Road, under Inderprastha flyover on Inderprastha Marg, Minto Road under Minto bridge, near Lajpat Nagar Metro station, Rohtak Road at Anand Parbat, Rani Jhashi Road, Azad Market, Y-point Kishan Ganj and Old iron bridge on Kishan Ganj Road.

The Meteorological Department forecast generally cloudy sky with moderate rain and thundershowers in parts of Delhi and neighbouring areas for Monday.

An official of the department said that for the next two days, rain and thunderstorm will continue in Delhi.

In Haryana, there is warning of heavy rainfall in isolated pockets for three days.

The minimum temperature is forecast to be 26 degrees, with the maximum temperature to hover around 32 degrees.

For Sunday, the Safdarjung observatory recorded 24.6 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, with humidity level at 8.30 am recorded to be 95 per cent.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police claimed they sent letters to civic agencies regarding water-logging cases, and also brief traffic staffs about handling traffic during the rains.

The traffic police have a detailed operating procedure for its personnel for the monsoon season.

On Saturday, about 30 passengers travelling in a city bus were stranded when the bus broke down in the middle of a water-logged road near Hanuman Mandir in Yamuna Bazar area. All passengers were later brought to safety.
