NEW DELHI: In a major breakthrough, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Friday arrested a Tanzanian national and seized three kg of heroin from his possession from the Delhi airport.
Officials of NCB said that they received a tip that a Tanzanian national, 40-year-old Marande M Azizi, would arrive in Delhi from Hyderabad with a large consignment of heroin.
The NCB team kept continuous surveillance at the airport and intercepted the suspected passenger. On checking his baggage, three kg of fine quality heroin was found concealed at the bottom of his bag.
During interrogation, Azizi revealed that the contraband was given to him by an African national in Nairobi, Kenya, to be handed over to an associate in Delhi.
"He revealed that from Nairobi, he was made to travel to New Delhi via Mumbai and Hyderabad. He was to be paid $2000 for carrying the contraband from Kenya to India. The trafficking of heroin from African countries to India is a new trend observed in recent times. Foreign authorities are being approached for investigation at their end," said a senior official.
The official added that the estimated value of the seized heroin is about Rs 15 crore.
