New Delhi: A group of teenager students walked into the LNJP hospital and Barakhamba Police station to get knowledge on medico-legal cases related to sexual offences. Justice Gita along with the DCP New Delhi Madhur Verma accompanied by Delhi State Legal Services Authority members led the school students providing them with all necessary information in this regard on Tuesday.
For many students, this was their first interaction. Justice Gita Mittal accompanied by members of DSLSA educated the students about several procedures that are adopted to counsel victims of sexual offences to adduce their agony and to set the law in motion. The students interacted with judges, doctors and police officials and asked them several questions clearing their confusion in these cases.
"At Police Station on Barakhamba Road, the students were educated about the working of a police station. They were made aware about how the victim lodges her or his compliant setting the criminal justice system into motion; the manner in which the rights of the victims and accused are protected by the police; the victim friendly procedure adopted by the police in the investigation of cases of sexual offences," Madhur Verma, DCP New Delhi said.
Students reflected a keen interest in police working and were happy to see how the records and case properties are maintained in police station premises. The students were also informed about initiatives like Women Help Desk and Public Facilitation Officer.
At the LNJP Hospital, the students were taken to the 'One Stop Centre' which provides facilities like medical assistance, counselling to victims of sexual offences and abuse. In these Centres, a gynaecologist, police officer and paralegal worker are present as permanent support persons for victims. The students were made to understand the functioning of these centres. They were also taken to observe the functioning of the casualty ward where they were explained medico-legal cases.
