New Delhi: A stage – 4 cancer patient who had been taking shelter at a subway outside All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) died on Friday morning. The patient had been living with his family in the subway ever since the lockdown was announced by the government due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Arvind who made a close associate with the family, as his wife who was undergoing treatment at AIIMS, told the correspondent that the incident took place early morning. "He had been quite ill since the time he came here. However, last night he was in his usual condition. He couldn't eat much as half his jaw was destroyed due to the cancer. He drank water and slept," he added.
Sarjuk Das who hails from Bihar and is the father of the patient found his son non-responsive in the morning. Arvind said as soon as they found out their son wasn't responding, they went to the police nearby. "The police officials asked the family members to call helpline numbers and later an ambulance came to take the body away," he added.
Post mortem of the body is going on. The family was also asked whether there were any signs of Coronavirus. Das' son was earlier taken to AIIMS where they were told Safdarjung Hospital will handle the case. "We had taken him to the emergency a few days back where the patient couldn't even walk. They asked us if
he had symptoms of Coronavirus and when we said he had no symptoms, they kept making us go in circles from one room to the other. Getting an
X-Ray was so difficult. The hospital wasn't admitting the patient. They told us Safdarjung will handle the case," Arvind said.
The post mortem report is yet to come. Meanwhile, the subway still has numerous patients, few in serious conditions with no medical facility.
