Special Metro train on Yellow Line to honour Indian icons

New Delhi: Ahead of the Independence Day celebrations in the Capital, the Delhi Metro on Monday pressed into service a six-coach special train wrapped with photographs of freedom fighters and other Indian icons, to spread the message of patriotism.

For the next tow months, Trains on the Yellow Line between Samaypur Badli and HUDA City Centre will carry pictures of Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose, BR Ambedkar, Lata Mangeshkar, APJ Abdul Kalam, shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan and cricket icon Kapil Dev, a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) official said.

"The train will carry a lot of inspiring messages to spread the idea of nationalism and unity among metro commuters," the official said.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh paid tribute to the freedom fighters and martyrs by writing a message on the decorated train, he said.

He wrote 'Happy Independence Day' in Hindi on a panel on the train at the Lok Kalyan Marg Metro station and wished people on the occasion.

Meanwhile, on August 15, services on entire Delhi Metro network will remain operational, though entry and exit points will be closed at four stations on the Violet Line, namely Lal Quila, Jama Masjid, Delhi Gate and ITO during the Prime Minister's address from Red Fort.

"To facilitate people at Lal Quila station on Independence Day, additional ticket counters will be opened at Lal Quila and Jama Masjid Metro stations, along with deployment of additional staff for guiding the rush of passengers after the ceremony.

"All Metro stations will remain Open on Independence Day but parking will be closed from 6 am on August 14 till 2 pm on August 1," the DMRC official added.
