Greater Noida/Ghaziabad: Heavy downpour in Noida and Ghaziabad regions of the NCR left residents in fury on Thursday morning, as several mishaps were reported in the two districts, including a three-storey building which collapsed in the Mubarakpur village in Greater Noida. Fortunately, no causalities were reported in the incident.
However, an eight-year-old girl died as the roof of a dilapidated house in Ghaziabad's Shaheed Nagar colony collapsed due to heavy rains, Ghaziabad Police said.
According to police, the incident in Mubarakpur was reported in the wee hours, but all three occupants of the building were rescued safely.
Locals said a basement was being constructed adjacent to the building and the water that got filled up into the dug up space that caused the weak building to collapse. This is the third building collapse in Greater Noida and Ghaziabad in the last 15 days.
Meanwhile, in Ghaziabad's Vasundhara area, a road caved, leading to several families living in a nearby high rise building to vacate their residences as a precaution.
"The road along the building, that has been under construction for the last couple of years, sunk, causing a threat to residents of the nearby society. We have asked the 64 families of the society to vacate their houses as a precautionary measure and the rescue work is underway by the National Disaster Rescue Force and teams from Ghaziabad Police," said Akash Tomar, Superintendent of Police (City).
Additionally, daily office goers had to go through hell as the basements of most of high-rise societies in Greater Noida West were flooded.
"As I reached the basement of my building to get into my car, I thought I saw that the basement was flooded with more than three feet of water. It was nearly impossible to get into the car and reach office. I tried to call a cab, but their charges were very higher," said Dheeraj Sharma, a resident of Stellar Jeevan society in Greater Noida West.
The condition of roads and outer parts of the city was more miserable, as the heavy downpour in Noida and Ghaziabad regions left most of the areas inundated and water-logged, leading to massive traffic jams.
Meanwhile, Ritu Maheshwari, the district magistrate of Ghaziabad, on Thursday declared that all schools till Class XII across the district will remain closed on Friday.
