Shaheen Bagh turns down cops' request to vacate protest site

Update: 2020-03-17 18:13 GMT

New Delhi: In an effort to convince Shaheen Bagh protesters to move from the site in the wake of Coronavirus, a team of Delhi police under the supervision of the area ACP Jagdish Yadav visited the protest site urging the protesters to move and vacate the road.

The protesters turned down the request saying that CAA is a bigger threat than Coronavirus. The talks were carried on near the barricades where the women protesters refused to move. They had earlier said that they are taking adequate safety measures to prevent themselves from Coronavirus. They are also working on a plan to sit in factions and small groups at the same site. On Monday night some were seen sitting maintaining some distance from each other.

Earlier on Tuesday Delhi police called some of the protesters to Shaheen Bagh police station but the talks failed, then a team led by the area ACP visted the spot but some of the protesters wanted them to make a request whatever it may be from the stage to maintain transparency but then some women reached near the barricades approximately 100 meters from the stage and turned down the request of the police team to vacate the road or let the traffic pass from another road.

"The police wanted us to at least vacate one road for vehicular movement but some women from the protesters turned the idea down citing security concerns" said Shaheen Kauser, a protester.

The hearing over the Shaheen Bagh protest is scheduled for next week. Prior to this hearing, the police is trying to find a solution to this issue through peaceful dialogue.

"The police came to make a point on vacating the road, however, let me ask that what happens in a DTC bus? How many people travel in a bus? Why is that all the corona scare is just limited to Shaheen bagh," said Shahnawaz, another protester.

The women are also considering an option to limit the number of protesters to less than 50 and some at the protest sites in shifts to protest against CAA and NRC.
