Senior IT executive befriended on FB, raped

Gurugram: The dangers of social media in the context of women's safety again came to the fore after a senior IT executive alleged of being raped by a man, whom she met in a social media platform. The ordeal for the woman started when she befriended a man named Mahesh through Facebook. After having online conversation, the accused requested the girl to meet him in a hotel.

The rape survivor in her formal complaint alleged that Keshav deliberately mixed a sedative in her drink that made her unconscious. During her dormant, he along with his friend sexually assaulted her in the hotel. She has also alleged that she has been duped of Rs 21 lakhs by the accused.

The following incident is just one more example where criminals are using the social media to target women. The number of complaints relating to sexual harassment of women through the online medium has risen over 40 percent compared to 2017. Many molesters have adopted the route of social media like Twitter, Facebook and messenger services as means of sexually harassing women by sending them lewd messages. Most of the females are also intimidated by means of threatening messages.

In some of the cases that were reported, a man was arrested after a minor complained to the cyber police of being molested by him in social media.
