New Delhi: South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Wednesday announced a special drive to make markets 'plastic-free'. Initially, five markets from each zone will be rid of plastic bags, after which the drive will be intensifies in all markets.

To achieve this target, the Corporation has sought support of RWAs, MWAs and school children.

Further, SDMC officials said that cleanling of ponds in Najafgarh Zone has been started at Nangli Sakrawati and Pochanpur, in the presence of many councilors. It has been observed that accumulation of waste in ponds results in breakout of various diseases, especially vector-borne ones.

"A number of vehicles, trucks, JCBs and compactors were on Wednesday thoroughly washed at central stores and dispensaries under West Zone. Apart from this around two dozen public toilets were also taken up for cleanliness and sanitation exercise. Another pink toilet at Janakpuri started dispensing sanitary napkins through a vending machine installed there," said an official.
