Gurugram: There seems to be no visible change in the security situation on Gurugram's roads, where commuters are forced to take lift in unregistered cabs and autos, jeopardizing their safety.
Despite crimes ranging from robberies to attempt of rape to murders being reported in cabs, their demand is ever so high due to lack of an effective public transportation system in Gurugram.
While autos are still the most popular form of transport, commuters going to Faridabad, Noida and Delhi prefer cabs.
Last year, over 20,000 autos went off the city roads, after a massive crackdown by Gurugram Police on autos operating without legal permits. Later, after negotiations, services resumed.
Gurugram Police claims that strict action is taken against illegal cabs which, if caught, must pay fine up to Rs 2,000.
However, many drivers of illegal cabs reportedly get away by paying a bribe of Rs 100-300 to the policemen. Most cabs provide transportation services to MNCs and BPOs.
Providing wrong information, using tinted glasses and falsified number plates are some of the major complaints against such illegal cabs.
Many such vehicles are seen along National Highway-8, Manesar, Gurugram-Faridabad road, Golf Course Road and MG Road. Gurugram Police must take a cue from Chief Minister Manohar Lal's constituency Karnal, where the district police is providing a police batch to registered autos.
With over 20,000 autos and a large number of cabs in the Millennium City, there are demands that the same proactiveness as seen in Karnal be taken in Gurugram as well.
