New Delhi: Patients coming to All India Institute of Medical Sciences' (AIIMS) Orthopedic Department will be in for a pleasant surprise, as the department is going to procure advanced robotic technology to handle complex spine and ortho surgeries. This will also cut the waiting period for the ortho-surgeries.
According to an official, "The robot has been named 'Celiyas', and AIIMS will be the first government-run hospital to have such technology. Earlier, Apollo Hospital had implemented similar technology."
A doctor at the AIIMS Trauma Centre said that the administration had sent a proposal for robotic surgery last year to get the approval and the Union Ministry of Health However granted approval for purchase of two robots.
He added that of the two robots, one will be used for spinal surgery and another will be used for joint replacement of patients.
Sources claimed that each robot will cost around Rs 12 crore and after the assembling of these computer arms in US, they will be brought to AIIMS.
Each robotic arm can easily drill 1.6mm, with high accuracy. Experts would still monitor the entire operation, as a single mistake may cause major damage to patients.
"With the installation of the robotic arms at the orthopedic department, the time of surgery will also be reduced," said the doctor, adding that all major and complex surgeries – such as bone cancer and joint replacement – would be done easily with this technology.
It would also reduce the need for repetitive surgeries as well as duration of operation.
The orthopedic department will now become the second department where patients will have access to robotic surgery.
