Gurugram: In a major repreive for citizens of Gurugram, Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has decided to reduce the rate for water supply.
The reduction comes after the public agency had increased the rates of water supply in its sectors after duration of 16 years in 2017.
The steep hike, however, was protested by the residents, which ultimately resulted in slight reduction of the tariff.
Under the new scheme, 10 kilolitres will be charged at Rs 2.50, 20 kilolitres at Rs 5, 30 kilolitres at Rs 8 and beyond 30 kilolitres, the users will be charged at Rs 10.
Those areas which have not installed metres will be charged on flat rate basis.
Earlier, for consumption of 31 kilolitres of water, the customers were charged at Rs 4 per kilolitre.
With an increase of Rs 6 per kilolitre, the residents will now be paying Rs 10 per kilolitre for consumption of more than 20,000 kilolitres of drinking water.
The last time water tariff were increased by HUDA was in October 18, 2001.
Citing the rise in expenses due to increase in electricity, labour and other raw material charges, the officials of HUDA have justified the increase in rates for supply of drinking water. HUDA officials have maintained that not hiking the rates for a long time resulted in losses to public body.
Besides erratic water supply in the past there have been complaints the HUDA officials have not cleaned the city water tankers for months.
