NEW DELHI: The redevelopment project seven colonies in south Delhi, initiated by the Centre, will require 15,779 kilolitres of fresh water daily, environmental activists protesting the project have claimed. After compiling all available data, the activists stated that 64 per cent of the fresh water will be needed post construction.

"Delhi has a huge water crisis and the amount here is alarming. The authorities should act responsibly before giving permission to such project. If this happens, the water crisis of the city will increase," said Kanchi Kohli an activist.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court had slammed the Centre, the Delhi government and the civic bodies for not taking any steps to tackle the serious problem of groundwater depletion in the Capital.

The apex court perused a report by the NITI Aayog which had stated that various authorities were passing the buck and shying away from their responsibility.

"You are doing nothing to reduce water consumption. There is no plan for recharge and preservation of groundwater," a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta had said.

It further asked the Centre for immediate, intermediary and long-term measures to keep a check on the depletion of groundwater in Delhi.
