New Delhi: A 34-year-old cleric of a madrasa at Ghaziabad, where a minor girl was allegedly raped last week after being kidnapped from east Delhi's Ghazipur, was arrested on Friday.
Police said that the accused, whose name has not been revealed, was being questioned for several days regarding the incident and on Friday he was finally arrested.
The cleric was arrested by the Special Task Force team of the Delhi Police Crime Branch under appropriate sections of the POSCO Act.
The Crime Branch team had earlier visited the Ghaziabad madrasa twice and questioned with several people in the area.
While scanning CCTV footage of the area, cops saw a minor taking the girl with him.
On Friday, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal tweeted, "Ghazipur rape case of a 10 year old is just so so so disturbing. The trial should be completed in a fast track manner in the next 6 months and culprits should be given death penalty. Such horrifying crimes against children must STOP! Raping a child is raping humanity. Sick."
The girl was rescued on April 22 from the madrasa by a Delhi Police team, after police were informed on April 21 by the girl's father that she had gone missing after she went to market. Subsequently, the girl was rescued from the madrasa.
After her rescue, locals in Ghazipur had staged a protest a few days ago at NH 24 demanding action in the case. The protest led to severe traffic jam on the stretch.
