Rambir Shokeen escapes from UP police custody in Delhi

New Delhi: Rambeer Shokeen, uncle of gangster Neeraj Bawana, escaped from the UP police custody while he was being taken to the Safdurjung hospital in south Delhi for a medical checkup.

Shokeen was arrested for allegedly possessing an AK-rifle earlier in Delhi. Manhunt has been launched to nab him. However, the Delhi police said that they were not informed about Shaukeen being brought to Delhi rasing questions over the Baghpat police.

"He absconded while being produced by Baghpat Police in Safdarjung Hospital. They didn't inform us. He absconded around 2 pm but UP Police officials called 100 no at around 5:30 pm," said Vijay Kumar , DCP South Delhi.

This raises severe doubts over the alleged escape. The delay in informing the Delhi police by Baghpat cops is now a matter of investigation.

Ex-MLA Rambeer Shokeen was arrested by Special Cell under MCOCA in 2016. He was brought to Safrdarjung hospital for checkup by UP Police. He had applied for interim bail on grounds of illness of his wife. Several teams have been formed to arrest him.

Denied a ticket by the BJP during the 2013 assembly elections, Shokeen contested and won as an Independent candidate from Mundka in northwest Delhi.

Shokeen and nine others, including Bawana, were chargesheeted in the Special MCOCA court in 2015 with the prosecution accusing them of running an organised crime syndicate and being involved in several "heinous crimes on a continuous basis" in Delhi-NCR.
