New Delhi: An FIR was registered on Thursday against professor Atul Johri of Jawaharlal Nehru University's School of Life Sciences (SLS), following allegations of sexual harassment against him by a group of women students, Delhi Police said on Friday.
The FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj police station, cops said, adding that Johri would be questioned soon.
JNU, in a statement, said that a few students from SLS met with top administration official and verbally expressed their grievances against the professor.
They were assured that the administration will look into the grievances through the appropriate body, as per the rules/mechanism of the University.
The professor, meanwhile, on Friday tendered resignation for all administrative positions, including warden of Chandrabhaga Hostel and director of University Internal Quality Assurance Cell.
"The professor often makes sexually-coloured remarks, open demands for sex and comments on the figure of almost every girl. If a girl objects, he holds a grudge against her," the women students had said in a statement on Thursday.
"There is a financial nexus between the professor and the administration. No instrument has been purchased for years, but still crores of rupees have been spent," they added.
Johri, however, claimed he is being targeted by Left-leaning students "The girls who have levelled the allegations had received a mail from me on February 27 regarding irregular attendance in the lab. So, they are targeting me," Johri had said on Thursday.
On Friday, several students of SLS demanded the School's Dean to suspend the professor from all official positions and initiate an inquiry.
In a letter to the Dean, the students said, "As you already know, an FIR has been filed against the professor and since he is holding university posts, we ask you to immediately inform the Vice-Chancellor and University administration to suspend him from all positions."
