New Delhi: To curb criminal activities reported from inside parks, Delhi Police have began gathering a database of suspicious persons who often roam such places.
Police claimed that they have heightened security in parks and several teams have been assigned to patrol parks in plain clothes and keep a tab on suspicious activities.
According to police sources, every police station in South East Delhi has started a drive as part of which more than 700 persons – who were either found to be suspicious or were drug addicts – have been questioned.
"We took these persons to the police station, where their details were taken," said a police official.
Police claimed that motive behind the drive is not to harass anyone, but to make sure the police are able to check suspicious activities inside parks.
The drive was started in February, and resulted in details of more than 700 persons being collected. "On February 4, we took the details of 225 persons, while on February 5, around 159 persons were questioned. In the next four days, we questioned more than 300 persons," a senior police official said. Police further claimed that they have often found involvement of drug addicts in cases of snatching, and even murder.
This prompted them to started the drive, with a team from every police station in South East Delhi visiting parks.
Meanwhile, for Valentine's Day, Delhi Police have heightened security in several parks to stop untoward incidents.
"Parks are a place where people come to enjoy with their friends and family. Our priority is to keep them safe," said a police official. In January, a man was stabbed to death after he resisted a snatching bid in the forested area inside a park in Govindpuri.
