Over 250 waterlogging-prone areas across Delhi

New Delhi: As rains continue to last various parts of Delhi-NCR, waterlogging has become a regular problem; so much so that bus have submerged in muddy rainwater in Minto Bridge area. And in its investigations, Delhi Police has found that more than 250 areas and roads where waterlogging has been reported.

The city police regularly write to concerned agencies in case of such problems, and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Wednesday replied that its concerned staff is "fully geared up to resolve waterlogging-related problems under the jurisdiction of the civic body in the shortest possible time."

Police data accessed by Millennium Post states that on 96 roads, waterlogging has been reported three times. These areas include ITO–Tilak Marg–Sikandra Road, Bhajanpura to Khajuri, Dhaula Kuan to Nariana, Bhogal to Ashram flyover, and Adhchini T-Point.

Meanwhile, at least 78 places have reported waterlogging problem twice this season, which include Kashmere Gate Metro Station, W Point–ITO, Rao Tularam Margo to South Avenue, and Saket Court to Hauz Rani.

Areas like Saket Hospital, railway under bridge at Lawrence road and Wazirpur Industrial area, IIT flyover, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Hyatt to Moti Bagh ring road, Patel Chest Institute to Mukherjee Nagar, Sangam Vihar, Sanjay Jheel, Dwarka, Nehru Nagar, Defence Colony, Khajuri Chowk, Katwaria Sarai, Mehrauli, Anand Parbat, Bhisham Pitamah Marg, Maharani Bagh are among the 190 locations where waterlogging has been reported occasionally.

"After finding waterlogging spots, we write to the concerned agencies in this regard," a police official said.

According to cops, before the rainy season, senior police officer brief traffic police personnel on how to manage traffic during rains. "Police personnel are briefed on where to divert the traffic and how commuters should be informed," the officer said.

The use of Twitter and Facebook also helps in getting the message to commuters instantly, so that they can avoid stretches with traffic snarls.

In 2017, more than 150 places had reported complaints of waterlogging.

Meanwhile, SDMC Mayor Narendra Chawla stated that the Coporation's staff has been instructed to resolve waterlogging complaints at the earliest.

On Tuesday, he also inaugurated a dedicated helpline number 23228325, which will remain open on all working days during office hours.

The complaints will be monitored to ensure appropriate action and to avoid loss, damage or disruption due to rainwater accumulation.

The helpline has been established in the Mayor's office itself, so that senior officers can keep an eye on the functioning of the helpline.

Chawla underlined the need for proper maintenance of small drains and ensuring that the entire machinery remains well oiled.
