Over 1,600 cases of robbery so far this year in Delhi

New Delhi: Incidents of robbery have been haunting the national Capital for several years now, with robbers wantonly using firearms to shoot dead innocent bystanders who try to catch them.

The latest victim in such an incident was cab driver Mohit in Anand Vihar, who was shot dead by robbers on Friday night when he tried to catch hold of them when they were robbing a passerby.

Data compiled by Delhi Police, accessed by Millennium Post, has revealed that since 2016, the Capital has witnessed more than 9,500 cases of robbery, in which as many as 12,000 persons were arrested and around 6,800 cases were cracked.

The data further claims that till September 15 this year, around 1,600 cases were reported.

Of these, 1,398 were solved and investigation in these cases led to the arrest of 2,658 accused persons.

Last year, the number of robbery cases was 3,147, in which more than 2,500 were worked out and 4,509 robbers were arrested.

In 2016, 4,761 cases were reported, of which 2,940 were cracked and 4,968 criminals were nabbed.

According to police officials, several steps have been taken to prevent robberies, which include picketing at strategic locations and conducting group patrolling.

Apart from the district units, the Crime Branch of Delhi Police also keeps tab on various robbery cases.

The investigating agency prepared a compendium of around 1,000 pages having names of more than 1,000 active snatchers and robbers in the national Capital.

Meanwhile, talking about the Anand Vihar shooting case, DCP (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav on Sunday said the investigation is on going and several teams have been formed to work on several angles.

"The criminals could be from across the border. There are clues for that, but exact identity is yet to be ascertained," said Yadav.
