Old Yamuna bridge reopens for traffic

NEW DELHI: The old Yamuna bridge was reopened for vehicular movement on Thursday after remaining shut for four days due to rise in the water level beyond the danger mark. But the water level in the Yamuna river has started receding since Wednesday and it went below the danger mark of 204.83 meters on Thursday. The maximum level for the river in the last five years. The old Yamuna bridge is connecting with the Walled City and Trans-Yamuna areas such as Seelampur and Babarpur.

In his official order, District Magistrate (east and Shahdara) K Mahesh directed the Delhi Police and its traffic wing to open the bridge for traffic movement with immediate effect. On Sunday, the authorities had closed the bridge for traffic movement due to rise in the water level of Yamuna. It is pertinent to mentioned that Rail traffic was smoothly was opened on Wednesday on the old Yamuna rail bridge , which was suspended on the last Tuesday as a precaution after the river crossed the danger mark.

According to the irrigation and flood control department, the water level is expected to recede further in the coming days. The water level of the Yamuna river here has started receding and reached 204.31 metres on Thursday. The water level of the river, which had crossed the danger mark of 204.83 metres since July 28, reached 204.82 metres on Wednesday afternoon after which it started receding. The water level is showing a falling trend and is expected to reach 204.18 metres by Thursday evening, a Flood Control Department official said.
