Officials likely to urge Delhi govt not to rush CCTV project

NEW DELHI: Top officials in the Delhi administration are likely to urge the elected Aam Aadmi Party government not to hurry about in executing the CCTV cameras project, as it could destroy its motive and effective implementation. The Cabinet is likely to discuss the CCTV project this week.

"The government should not do the whole project in a hurry, as implementation and installation of the project could take some time," said sources.

A six-member committee, constituted Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal in May to oversee the CCTV project, has also prepared a draft of the policy.

Last week, the committee extended the deadline to receive public feedback on its recommendations till July 30, on the request of the AAP government.

The panel, in a set of rules, has proposed that Delhi Police's Deputy Commissioner for (Licensing) will be the "appropriate authority" on installation, operation and monitoring of CCTV cameras in public places, including in housing colonies, market places and government offices among others. The rules are proposed to be notified under the Delhi Police Act, 1978.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had lashed out at the recommendations, saying it will only encourage "licence raj". The ruling AAP had said it was free to junk the report, especially in view of the July 4 Supreme Court judgment.

Kejriwal had said that the government will soon call a meeting of all resident Welfare associations and market associations to discuss and finalise modalities of installing CCTV cameras.
