NEW DELHHI: In the wake of increasing Coronavirus cases, the university administration has shut classes and asked students in the hostel to vacate rooms. However, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) have demanded the administration to provide residential facilities for students who are staying back.

In a meeting that took place between the hostel presidents on Monday, the students said that no student will be forcefully vacated. "Knowing the fact that a lot of students can't afford to go back and traveling also might lead to students being more vulnerable to the virus. The administration should provide proper residential facilities on the campus for whoever is staying back," said a statement by JNUSU.

The student union has also demanded that the administration should open the health centre on weekends as well and alleged that many students with symptoms have been turned down by the centre.

"Also it has happened that students who have reported certain symptoms are been turned back by health center and are not been tested just on the fact that they don't have a travel history to abroad. This should stop. If any students feels to get checked, has every right to get the blood tested," said the union.

They have also demanded that one of the dormitories, which is vacant, "should be declared as an isolation ward. Rather than every hostel having single rooms for isolation."

"Sanitation wardens should ensure hygiene and cleanliness. Sanitation workers should be available on weekends for the following weeks," they added.
