NEW DELHI: The Cyber Cell of Crime Branch on Friday said they have arrested two cheats for allegedly duping a woman to the tune of Rs 15 lakh by cheating her on a matrimonial website on the pretext of marriage.
The accused, identified as 31-year-old Oboh Tony Erhauyi, a resident of Mayur Vihar, and 40-year-old Rosy Noronha, a resident of Mayur Vihar Phase-3, had registered on a matrimonial website and cheated the complainant by posing as a prospective groom for her daughter.
Four mobile phone handsets, four SIM cards, three dongles, two laptops and one external hard disk were recovered from their possession.
All the recovered items were used for the purpose of cheating, police said.
On September 19 last year, the complainant's wife said that she accepted the proposal for her daughter from one Vinoth Abhishek and exchanged their personal email addresses and mobile numbers with each other.
Later, the complainant's daughter received a call from so-called Vinoth Abhishek who stated that he was in Ship duty and he was coming to Delhi on October 21 by flight for a personal meeting with the complainant's daughter and her family members.
"The accused then cooked up a story of pirates sea attack and said that his personal belongings have been dispatched to complainants address and then he extracted close to Rs 15 lakh from the complainant on the pretext of various charges incurred at the airport," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Alok Kumar.
Oboh Tony Erhauyi and his wife Rosy Noronha have been arrested on charges of cheating and criminal breech of trust, police added.
