Moti Nagar sewer deaths: Two more men arrested

NEW Delhi: In the latest development in the case of the Moti Nagar sewer deaths, where five sanitation workers suffocated to death while cleaning the sewage tank in DLF Capital Greens in Karampura, Delhi Police arrested two more people on Monday.

Monika Bhardwaj, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), said, "DN Mishra is the senior manager-cum-property manager for JLL (Jones Lang LaSalle) has been arrested. He was the head for this site on behalf of JLL."

"Another Person Bharat Raj Verma has also been arrested. He is the assistant manager (technical) in JLL. Both had close supervision on the operations regarding operation and maintenance of the sewage tank," she added.

Earlier, Delhi Police had arrested two persons, including a director from Delhi identified as Pravin and a supervisor Digambar from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

Police sources also said they have recovered some documents related to the incident after they issued a notice to the concerned companies.

Sources added that the accused Digambar had forced the five victims to go inside the sewage plant.

However, when they refused, the accused shouted at them and threatened to fire them.

They also said that accused Pravin was related to Raja, one of the victims of the tragedy.

On September 9, five men died after they went inside a sewage tank for cleaning it in west Delhi's Moti Nagar area.

During preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the maintenance of the entire residential area had been assigned to a private company, which sub-contracted the work to five to six other agencies.

A case under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code, sections 7 and 9 of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, as well as section 3(1)(j) and 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act had been registered against the accused.
