Gurugram: Despite several initiatives, Gurugram authorities have not been able to improve its position in ensuring cleanliness and hygiene across the city. Taking cognizance of the situation, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has now again introduced certain laws to make the city clean.

Specifically mentioning the shopkeepers and vendors, the civic body has warned about imposing heavy fines on those littering in the public spaces. Accountability of institutions like hotels, restaurants and societies have also been fixed by the MCG. Bringing in the retrospective law of 2016 in regard to solid waste management, it has been stated categorically that units generating more than 100 kilograms of wastes per day will also have the responsibility of recycling some of the waste. Most of the residential societies have already undertaken the investments in composting units.

The Gurugram civic body in cooperation with the foreign company has begun the process of effective recycling of waste which in turn will also reduce the mounting garbage at Bandhwari site. Initial challenges in the project have resulted in various roadblocks in this initiative.

MCG has also sounded optimistic in regard to steps being taken to segregate wastes generated at homes across the city.

Most of the environmental activists and members of resident welfare associations are discontent with the slow progress of MCG towards improving the situation at Bandhwari landfill site. Further, there have also been complaints that vacant areas around the colonies are being used by the MCG officials to dump garbage.

Several protests have been hosted in the past by the residents of Sector-17 and Sector-56 over the large disposal of garbage in the vacant areas. Various complaints has also been sent to the Chief Minister Window highlighting
