Man withdrew cash after exchanging ATM on pretext of helping; arrested

New Delhi: A 56-year-old man, who entered the ATM booth on the pretext of helping the victims, cheated their money after knowing their pin number, was arrested in Dwarka district, police said on Tuesday.

The investigating agency claimed that the accused used to get the credit or debit cards from scrap dealers or pickpocketers for Rs. 150-200.

Similarly, after committing two to three cheating in a city they immediately shift to other places. The probe in the case revealed that they were active in Delhi, Gurugram, Panipat, Ambala and Faridabad.

Police claimed that on October 4, around 6:00 in the evening, one security guard Pawan deployed at ATM booth in Jharoda Kalan, informed the cops that he has caught a suspicious person who has been roaming around the ATM since long with the help of public. He also informed that the apprehended person seems to be one of the suspects in a case of cheating, whose images were provided to him.

During the enquiry, cheater's name revealed as Balbir Singh (56). During his personal search 22 ATM cards of different banks and cash of Rs 35,500 have been recovered.

"Singh disclosed that they used to target ladies mostly and the ATM booths without the guard. Singh enters the booth and his nephew Rakesh wait outside. They intentionally withdraw the small sum of amount in small cities, as there was the possibility that the victim may skip lodging FIR in concerned police station for loss of small amount," police said.

DCP (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse claimed that on August 18, a case was registered at Baba Haridas Nagar police station, wherein a complainant stated that when she entered the ATM booth in Jharoda Kalan for withdrawal of some amount, an unknown person also followed her into the booth. During the withdrawal, that person saw her pin number and in spite of her warning, he did not go out of the booth giving the excuse of hot weather outside.

When she reached home, she received an SMS of withdrawal of Rs. 40,000 from her A/c and later, she received messages of other transactions also and she lost total Rs 1,15,000 from her bank account.
