Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad Police on Wednesday arrested a man who stabbed his reportedly pregnant wife to death, and dumped her body in a drain in the district's Crossings Republik township project after stuffing it inside a sack.
According to police, the arrested man has been identified as Rajeev Poddar, a resident of Ghaziabad's Vijay Nagar area.
Police said that Poddar was arrested from the road near ABES College in Ghaziabad on Wednesday morning.
Cops added that on August 25, the body of a woman was found stuffed inside a sack was found in a drain at Crossings Republik.
Locals informed the police after spotting it, following which the body was fished out and was sent for post-mortem examination.
Two days later, police identified the body as that of 28-year-old Sanjana, the wife of Rajeev Poddar.
Later, based on a complaint by the victim's father, a case was registered under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code against unidentified person(s) and an investigation was launched.
"During investigation, it came to light that the woman was murdered by her husband after a heated argument broke out between them on the night of the incident," said Manisha Singh, Circle Officer-I, Ghaziabad
"The accused told police that his wife was pregnant and the fight was initiated over the unborn child. Following the argument, the man stabbed his wife to death in a fit of anger and later stuffed the body into the sack and dumped it into a drain," she added.
Meanwhile, police are yet to verify Poddar's claims over his wife's pregnancy.
"During interrogation, the accused told police that his wife was pregnant at the time of incident. However, we are yet to ascertain the fact," added Singh.
