New Delhi: The Leiutnant-Governor of Delhi, Anil Baijal on Wednesday inaugurated an Organic Waste Converter Plant at the New Delhi Municipal Council Horticulture Nursery in Raja Bazar Area near Gole Market, where he said that the NDMC's list of green initiatives to find eco-friendly solutions for organic waste management is essentially making wealth from waste. The L-G also lauded residents for helping the Council in segregating waste at homes and reiterated their role in reducing waste dumping.

The new Organic Waste Converter Plant has been built by the Council in collaboration with the Sri Sri Rural Development Programme Trust of spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who also attended the inauguration.

L-G Baijal said the society needs to change its thinking in a way that will reduce waste generation and encourage segregation and recycling. He stressed the importance of all local municipal bodies and civic agencies in the Capital to adopt such measures so that Delhi could set an example for the rest of the country.

NDMC Chairperson, Dharmendra made the welcome address at the event, where he said that the Council had initiated a set of measures under the Swachh Bharat Mission to manage kitchen waste in its jurisdiction and this in-turn has saved the NDMC on a lot of costs related to manual labour and transportation. Dharmendra also told the gathering that the NDMC has chalked out plans to install more such devices and plants in colonies like Bharti Nagar and Sanghli Mess. He pointed out that the one at Madhu Limay Marg Nursery currently processes organic waste of around 1,000 kgs on a daily basis.
