Gurugram: Talk over the phone while driving or avoid wearing a seat belt when you travel on roads in Gurugram, don't get surprised if you are stopped by a Gurugram traffic official. Gurugram police is all set to break its previous record by already collecting Rs 5 crore in fines in just five months.
What seems to be even more noteworthy that unlike previous year where there were 68,000 traffic violators who were levied fines, this year there have been already over three lakh violators. The worst offenders have been found to be auto drivers followed by people who indulge in illegal parking to people driving without the seat belt.
This is not for the first time when Gurugram police has conducted initiatives where a large amount of challan is collected from erring drivers. Yet the rate of accidents in Gurugram continues to be on high. Last year, over 481 people lost their lives due to accidents on the city roads.
According to an official report, the majority of accidents happened after the vehicle was moving in the wrong direction. While the traffic police claims there have been crackdown, there are repeated complaints of rash, drunken and under age driving. The grievances have also been shared that the police officials are not present in those locations where these kinds of violations are most visible.
"I hope this move proves beneficial in instilling traffic sense among the residents. Sadly, the situation is not bright. Being stationed in prominent areas will result in police getting hold of large number of people, however the main culprits which are the trucks, autos and private buses get away, may be because of their clout," said Amardeep Singh.
"As Gurugram is expanding very fast, it is not possible for our official to be in every corner. Yet, through these initiative, we want to ensure that commuting is safe in Gurugram," said a police official from Gurugram police.
