Gurugram: The dubious tag of Millennium City being unsafe for women refuses to go away. In a major challenge for law enforcement officials, four cases of rape were reported in the city on Monday. The most shameful of these incidents was the sexual assault of a four-year-old where she was assaulted by the neighbour. The person has been arrested.

Also, a teenager and a minor were raped. The incidents were reported from Daultabad and Pataudi regions. In one of these incidents, a class 11 student was sexually assaulted by a person who was continuously harassing her. A 22-year-old who belonged to Nainital also lodged a complaint of being raped by a person who on the pretext of providing her a job sexually assaulted her.

For a city where there were over 100 cases of sexual assault against minors, law enforcement officials highlight the challenges in the conviction of the criminals. Citing the difficulties officials mention that there is a requirement of setting up of the fast track courts so that convictions can be secured at a quicker rate.

Another difficulty raised by the officials in dealing with such crimes is gathering concrete evidence and making the victim and their family mentally and physically fit to testify in the court proceedings that can extend up to minimum one to two years. Officials also indicate that in over 80 per cent of the cases, the culprit knows the rape survivor well. Therefore, in the long duration of the legal proceedings, the victim's family seeks compromise and do not wish to pursue their case further.
