Govt planning to hand over more parks to RWAs, NGOs for maintenance

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government will soon launch a scheme that will allow parks to be maintained by local residents and NGOs and the cost will be borne by the city government, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said. "We want to beautify Delhi. We have about 18,000 parks in the city. Last week, I had a meeting with some members of the RWAs. About, 250 RWAs maintain nearly 1,300 parks and they are maintaining them well," he said.

So, the government wants to introduce a new policy along with RWAs, women organizations and NGOs for the maintenance of parks in their areas, the chief minister said. "And, we will bear the cost. Soon, we are going to launch the scheme... And, two crore people of Delhi can together to make the city one of the best in the world," he added. The government will now announce a formal policy. We will involve RWAs, NGOs, corporates and other registered bodies to adopt and maintain 18,000 parks in Delhi. Let's make Delhi a city of beautiful parks and gardens," CM Kejriwal tweeted.

The government will bear 90 per cent of the maintenance cost while 10 per cent will have to be borne by the RWAs and the NGOs, a Delhi government spokesperson said.
