New Delhi: The internet phone is now being extensively used by criminals to commit crime and also to dodge the police. In a recent case, a gang of carjackers used the technology after they abducted a person and tried to get ransom through internet call in West Delhi's Janakpuri area. The accused's luck failed as they fell in the net of Crime Branch of Delhi Police from the bordering areas of the city, Police said on Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Bhisham Singh stated that on May 25 the complainant was going to his residence in Hari Nagar in a Honda Civic car. At about 11:15 pm, he stopped his car near Satyam Cinema, District Centre Janakpuri, to purchase a bottle of water. After coming from the shop when he was about to enter his car, three unknown persons came from behind and caught hold of him. They pushed him in the back seat of the car and drove away the car. "They robbed him of Rs 1.65 lakh kept in a bag. They also withdrew Rs 40,000 though his ATM card and after about two hours, they dumped him in a field near Murad Nagar. They also threatened him and fired two rounds in the air from a pistol," said DCP Singh. He further added that they took away his ATM card, cash and Honda Civic car. The complainant managed to call his family in the morning who then contacted police.

Police sources told the Millennium Post that the accused had used the victim's mobile phone to make internet call through Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) to one of his friends for ransom but the call was not entertained by the person whom he called.

"Basically, they wanted to dodge the police investigation by hiding the actual phone number," added the source, adding that VOIP calls are now frequently used by the criminals. The team which was formed under ACP (crime) Aditya Gautam was tasked to solve the case.

Police claimed they cracked the case in around 20 days and arrested two people. One of the accused was identified as Bittu Gulia who is very tech savvy. Another accused who was arrested identified as Ashok.
