NEW DELHI: A gang of five men who formed a gang in jail while serving a sentence was arrested by Delhi police. The gang used to interact with each other through social networking platforms and not directly over the phone to avoid detection by the police.

The five desperate criminals -- Arif, Anil, Asif, Salman and Abid alias Mota -- have been arrested by North-East District Police, who also recovered two motorcycles, five improvised pistols, 12 live cartridges and Rs 1.6 lakh from their possession. The police claimed that many incidents of robbery have been averted with their arrest.

The police caught them while investigating a case of 16 July where a PCR call was received at Usmanpur police station that some people opened indiscriminate firing on bikes near Pushta in North-East district. Local Police reached the spot where Narender Aggarwal, a resident of Kartar Nagar who works in a multi-national company as a distributor, stated that he was going to his office on his motorcycle with his colleague Sushil Kumar when they were intercepted by two bike-borne criminals and robbed Rs 11 lakh at gunpoint. The criminals also fired in the air while escaping. Cops formed teams and analysed the CCTV footage from the area to zero in on the gang.

On July 29, secret information was received by Delhi Police that the gang members were present in the area of Sonia Vihar, Delhi. Immediately a raid was conducted by the police teams and five desperate armed criminals were apprehended.
