Environment dept to intensify drive against plastic bags use

NEW DELHI: The environment department is working on strengthening the plastic ban in Delhi. The department has received complaints on huge violation of the order. Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) teams have found plastic carry bags of less than 50-micron size, officers told Hussain, who stressed on coordinated efforts should be taken on a regular basis by the Municipal Corporations, the Revenue and Environment Departments and the DPCC.

The action against use of plastic bags are in motion since the National Green Tribunal (NGT), in a notice dated August 10, 2017, directed that any person found in possession or using such plastic carry bags shall be liable to pay Environment Compensation of Rs 5000 per default and the carry bags shall be seized on the spot.

Teams of officers from the Revenue Department, NDMC, three MCDs, DPCC and Delhi Cantonment Board have ensured implementation of said directions.

Acting upon complaints of continuing use of plastic carry bags, Environment Minister, Imran Hussain has directed the officials to intensify the drive against them to make a visible difference. The department has stressed on effective implementation of the ban by carrying out widespread checks and running mass awareness programmes.

Last week, Delhi Environment Minister Imran Hussain directed the Delhi pollution board to strictly implement the ban on Chinese 'manjha' (kite string) in the city during the upcoming festive season. Environment Secretary, Member Secretary of DPCC and other senior officers of the Environment Department and DPCC.
