NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police has arrested eight individuals for staging a fake Delhi police raid to commit robbery at an insurance policy office.
The police were informed about incident through a complaint registered at the Laxmi Nagar Police Station.
According to the police, the accused, posing as members of the Special Staff Unit from the Delhi Police, robbed a laptop, mobile phones, and cash, and forcibly abducted
the office owner.
The incident took place on June 26, when complainant Salman (31), reported that four men claiming to be police officers stormed into his office and robbed him.
They took his laptop and mobile phone, then forced him into a Hyundai Venue car, assaulted him, and extorted 1.5 lakh rupees under the threat of implicating him in a fake insurance fraud case.
Based on his statement, an FIR was registered the following day at the Laxmi Nagar Police Station.
A team led by Inspector Jitendra Malik, under the supervision of ACP Pawan Kumar, launched an intensive investigation. CCTV footage and technical surveillance enabled the identification of the accused. Five were apprehended the night of June 28 while traveling in one of the vehicles used in the crime.
Three more were caught in follow-up raids across Delhi. Two cars, a Hyundai Venue and a Honda City were recovered, along
with Rs 10,000 in cash, a laptop, and three mobile phones. An additional Rs 45,000 linked to the crime was frozen
in a bank account.
Interrogation revealed that Hunny Kumar, a former employee of the victim, orchestrated the crime by passing insider information to Sunny Sharma, who had prior involvement in cyber fraud.
Together with other associates, they plotted the robbery, exploiting their fake police identities to intimidate the victim.
Co-accused Ankit Jain was also found to have a criminal record. All arrested individuals ranged in age from 27 to 42 and came from various professional backgrounds, including telecom, property dealing, and data analysis.
The Delhi Police has appealed to the public to stay vigilant against impersonators and to verify any official claims by contacting the nearest police station.
