Eastern Peripheral Expressway accident: Another woman succumbs to injuries

Greater Noida: 38-year-old Shabnam, one among 13 occupants of the Maruti Eeco car that was hit by an unidentified vehicle at Eastern Peripheral Expressway on Sunday night, succumbed to injuries during treatment at All India Institute of Medical science (AIIMS), on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

As per one of victim's relatives, Shabnam received critical injuries in her head and body. "Soon after the incident occurred, all the victims were rushed to Greater Noida Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) from where doctors referred three persons including Shabnam to AIIMS. Her injuries were critical and she died around 1:40 am on Tuesday. The other two youths- Sidrah and Musharraf are still getting treatment at the hospital," said Yasin Mewati, deceased's brother-in-law, who also lost his two daughters in the tragic incident.

Yasin also informed that his two sons Rihan, Farhan and nephew Rubiyan who were admitted to GIMS have been discharged on Tuesday after doctors declared their condition to be stable.

The incident took place near village Sirsa in Greater Noida around 9 pm on Sunday when all the 13 occupants of the car were returning to their home in Mithepur village of Bulandshahr after attending a marriage function in Ballabhgarh area in Haryana. All the victims were rushed to the hospital where six persons were declared dead on arrival while one more person succumbed to injuries. With Shabnam's death, the death, toll in the tragic incident has been gone to eight. Cops said that all the victims were from the families of two real brothers.

The deceased were Asim Mewati (43), his two daughters Sumaila (15) and Rihanna (17), niece Aqsa (7) and Farzana (28), aunt Shamsheera, driver Shakib (20) and Shabnam (38). The injured have been identified as Asim's son Rubiyan (6), niece Sidrah and his three nephews Rihan (16), Farhan and Musharraf (19).

Meanwhile, police are yet to make any breakthrough in the incident. "We have gone through the CCTV footage of the nearby area but didn't find any suspicious vehicle. We are still not clear with the exact time when the incident occurred so that we can identify the vehicle. A case has already been registered in the matter and probe is underway. Soon we are expecting a breakthrough," said a senior police officer.
