NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Wednesday inaugurated the new technical institution Netaji Subhash University of Technology (NSUT), here in Dwarka. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia dedicated the varsity, formerly known as Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology, to the people of Delhi.

"It is a matter of joy for Delhi to get a new technical university and now the responsibility of making this university world-class lies with the students, faculty and the vice-chancellor. The government has done its job by creating the university, now it is over to you," Sisodia said at the inauguration.

Along with an increased intake of 12,000, compared to its previous intake of 3,700 students, the university will offer BTech, MTech and MSc courses.

Recalling the sequence of events that led to the creation of the university, Sisodia said that between February 14 and March 13, 2015, he had held meetings with officers of the Education Department and placed his vision – but felt that it was one-sided since he spoke and others listened. "It was a monologue," Sisodia, who is also the Education Minister, said.

To change this, he and all senior officers of the Department decided to meet at a village near Raipur, Chattisgarh, on April 2, 2015, in an institute working on education.

"We stayed there for a week and discussed what we thought about education. It was there that we visualised the NSUT dream and in August 2015, the Delhi Cabinet approved the draft Bill for creation of NSUT," Sisodia said.

However, after the Delhi Assembly passed the Bill, it took two and a half years for the Centre to approve the NSUT, he stated.

The Deputy CM further said that the Delhi government has asked all heads of educational institutions of higher education that they should "provide a vision of how their institution will be in top 10 of the world, and the government will not allow resources to come in the way."

"The growth of NSUT and its further expansion will result in the creation of a much larger pool of competent faculty, professionals and researchers, which will result in achieving excellence and would make a significant contribution towards making Delhi the 'Knowledge Capital' of India," Sisodia asserted.

According to a communiqué, issued by the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government, the varsity will adopt 'concretely planned' and 'highly structured' research and study programmes.
