New Delhi: After a gruelling week where the heat wave led the mercury to soar to 45 degrees Celsius in Delhi, the weather department is expecting some relief over the next few days.
The regional weather forecasting centre in New Delhi has predicted that there could be a dust storm on Tuesday, followed by rain and a thundershower on Wednesday.
This could bring down the temperature to around 41 degrees.
On Sunday, the day temperature at the Safdarjung observatory was recorded at 44.2 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal.
"A heat wave is a condition when the maximum temperature of a place shoots beyond 40 degrees Celsius and is at least five degrees above the normal," said Kuldeep Srivastava, a senior scientist with the regional weather forecasting centre.
Even though the core city did not record a heat wave, other areas such as Palam, Aya Nagar and Ridge area experienced heat wave as the temperature in these areas was at least five degrees above the normal.
At the Palam observatory, the mercury touched 45.8 degrees Celsius, while the day temperature at Aya Nagar and Ridge area was recorded to be 45.9 degrees and 44.9 degrees, respectively.
The city had recorded the season's first heat wave last Saturday.
"We are expecting a dust storm on Tuesday followed by some rain on Wednesday. This could bring down the temperature to around 41 degrees by Wednesday in all places including Safdarjung, Palam, Aya Nagar and the Ridge area," said Srivastava.
The Indian Meteorological Departnment has forecast that some parts of the country may get relief from prevailing heat waves like condition in the next 24 hours.
