Delhi sizzles at 46 degree Celsius; heatwave to go on till next week

New Delhi: With heat wave-like conditions continuing in the National Capital, the maximum temperature went to 46 degrees Celsius on Thursday. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, people of Delhi will have no respite with the weather conditions set to persist till next Wednesday. The maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to cross 46 degrees Celsius soon, private forecaster Skymet said, while predicting that the heat wave conditions will continue for up to 12 days in north, central and western parts of the country.

"Temperature in Delhi will cross 46 degrees Celsius soon since there is no pre-monsoon activity and whatever western disturbances are there, are feeble. There are no chances of rains. It will keep temperature high for 10-12 days," said Mahesh Palawat, Director at Skymet.

An official of the MeT department said that heatwave-like conditions should be expected in some pockets of the Capital city, with the maximum temperature reaching more than 45 degree Celsius in the next few days. In addition, Delhiites are expected to see dry days in the week ahead, with humidity not crossing 21 percent and almost no rains, according to the weatherman.

Meanwhile, thunderstorm and dust storm is expected in some parts of Rajasthan. Also, rains are likely in southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala.

Other than Delhi, the heatwave conditions are also expected in some parts over west Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Marathwada and in isolated pockets of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, central Maharashtra, interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The weather office has predicted severe heat wave conditions in isolated pockets of East Uttar Pradesh. It has also forecast heatwave conditions in most parts, with severe heat wave in isolated pockets over West Rajasthan and Vidarbha.

Chandrapur in Maharashtra was the hottest place in the country with the mercury rising to 47.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, the MeT department said. That day temperature in Delhi was 42 degrees Celsius.
