Delhi riots: Everything from my life is gone, wife laments

New Delhi: At Old Mustafabad's Shakti Vihar, the family of Aas Mohammed is in mourning. Mohammed is the latest victim to be identified in the Delhi riots that shook the city from February 23 to 25. Mohammed like many others had left home and did not return, after which the family filed a missing report. According to the family, Mohammed had left for work on February 25 and did not return ever since. On February 27, five unidentified bodies were found at Shiv Vihar drain, Mohammed's body was one of them, which was identified by the family on March 9. "He was my oldest son and a daily wage laborer. I don't know who did this to him, but it has left our family shattered," Mohammed Tehseen, the victim's father told the correspondent.

They received a call on March 9 from RML hospital to identify the body, which was decomposed that the family recognised Aas Mohammed through his clothes. "He was wearing a green jacket, cream shirt, black pants, and a brown belt. This is how we recognised the body," said the 60-year-old man. The family received the body from GTB Hospital, as after identification it was shifted from RML Hospital. In the adjacent area of Mustafabad, is Chaman Park, where the family of 26-year-old Raheem still can't believe the death of their loved one. "He went to work on February 25 and did not return, we don't know what happened to him or how he was killed. But his body was found in Shiv Vihar nala and we were called to GTB to recognise the body," said Javed, his elder brother.

The family, which is poor and is still shocked and was scared to talk. "We don't want to talk to anyone. This is a huge loss for us, we buried his body on Tuesday," added Javed. There are many missing persons from different areas of north-east Delhi, and families are fearing what they can expect. Many are regularly visiting GTB Hospital to find the whereabouts of their loved ones. However, for Aas Mohammed's family this was a loss that no amount of compensation can recover. "We didn't do any ill with anybody, we just want that his children receive a quality life, with no one to take care of them, we don't know what will happen to them," said his father.

Aas Mohammed's wife, who is still in shock, broke down while trying to speak about the shock she received. "Everything from my life is gone," she said. About four bodies at RML Hospital have been identified. While three were residents of Shakti Vihar, one was from Shiv Vihar. The death toll in Delhi violence stands at 53, where 44 are said to have died at GTB hospital, 5 at RML hospital, 3 at LNJP hospital and one at Jag Pravesh Chandra hospital.
