Addict admitted to rehab dies of epileptic seizure, family alleges foul play
A recovering addict who was admitted to a local drug rehabilitation centre in Nihal Vihar died after he reportedly suffered an epileptic seizure in Outer Delhi on Monday.
He was shifted to a local hospital by the rehabilitation centre officials. However, he died on the way.
His body has been kept at the local mortuary and will be handed over to the relatives once the cause of for death is ascertained. According to a senior police official, the deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Rajesh Gupta.
He lives with his family and is survived by his wife and two children at Yadav Park.
In a statement to police, the family has claimed that Rajesh has been a drug addict for quite some time and has already been admitted to several drug rehabilitation centres in Delhi.
After being convinced by his father Durgashakti Prasad, he decided to enroll in Asha Kiran drug rehabilitation centre in Nihal Vihar.
On Monday morning, the rehab centre officials reported that Rajesh was complaining of uneasiness and wanted to visit the hospital.
"The rehabilitation centre officials had claimed that Rajesh was feeling uneasy. When they shifted him to the local hospital, he started having fits after which he died," said a senior police official.
However, Rajesh's family is claiming that there is foul play.
They have expressed doubts at the treatment that Rajesh was receiving and alleged that the treatment may have resulted in his death.
"The family has claimed foul play in the case. His father is currently in Munger and will reach Delhi within a day. His post-mortem report will come in by Tuesday until then we will investigate the case from all angles," the official added.
