In a case of cardamom robbery worth Rs 14 lakh, the Delhi Police on Friday arrested two people and recovered 19 bags of cardamom. The miscreants had left behind an olfactory trail which helped the cops to trace them.
This interesting case came to light after it was known that Elaichi worth 14 lakh was stolen from Lahori gate. However, while searching the stolen bags of cardamom, the cops used their olfactory senses to sniff out the stored stolen bags.
The incident was reported on the intervening night of 24 and May 25 when a tola of 26 bags of green cardamom was stolen by breaking the locks of a godown of the complainant situated in Gandhi Gali, Lahori Gate.
This place is known for its wholesale of spices.
The cops soon registered the FIR and made several teams to nab the elaichi thieves. The teams gathered the CCTV evidence from the lane and spotted some labourers wearing a special style lungi.
The CCTV cameras installed near the place were checked and the movement of stolen goods was tracked.
These goods were first of all taken to a place near Bara Tooti Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Delhi and unloaded on the road.
Soon the teams were deployed at places to search for the labourers.
The efforts soon yielded results and some of them wearing same style lungi were picked.
On interrogation, it was found that the labourers forgot the place where they had offloaded the bags filled with cardamom.
The twist came when the cops resorted to their olfactory senses to sniff out the typical 'Elaichi' flavour.
Trailing the smell, they soon reached the godown. Following this, a duo was arrested.
" Two accused Pawan and Rahul both residents of old Delhi have been arrested and we recovered 19 bags of cardamom that is close to 950 kgs," said DCP North Jatin Narwal.
