Delhi Police on Saturday arrested a youth involved in theft of several electronic goods from Munirka in South Delhi.
Since the beginning of 2017, a number of burglaries had been reported from Munirka.
In most of the cases, it was found that the complainants were college students or exam aspirants, who were living in rented accommodations in Delhi. Many such students had lost laptops, mobile phones and other electronic items
As most of these thefts were noticed at around the same time when scores of delivery boys would come to pick up tiffin boxes delivered the previous night, the police's needle of suspicion pointed towards the
tiffin delivery boys operating in the area.
Cops eventually formed a team and scanned all the delivery boys in the area.
Soon success came their way when they noticed a delivery boy carrying a laptop.
On being inquired, the boy tried to dodge their questions, but cops soon established that he had indeed stolen the laptop from one of the students' room.
The accused was identified as Noor Islam, alias Rahul, a resident of Kolkata who currently resides in Munirka and was arrested soon.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that during early morning hours, when he would come to collect tiffin boxes delivered a day before, he often found that the students were half asleep and unaware of who would come to the door.
"Since the students did not properly latch or lock their rooms, the accused found it an easy task to steal laptops and mobile phones. The laxity of students made him a serial burglar who targeted students," said Chinmoy Biswal, Additional DCP (South).
With Noor Islam's arrest, cops have solved 17 cases of theft and burglaries.
